McMillen Health’s Brush! Oral Health Program is an initiative designed to educate and launch lifelong dental health in children. By financially backing this innovative program for over a decade, K21 Health Foundation has been instrumental in bringing the Brush! program to our county and aims to equip families with the knowledge and tools needed to support healthy smiles.
Why is Oral Health Important?
The need for early oral health education is clear. Recent statistics show that a staggering 23% of US children aged 2-5 years have cavities, and 1 in 5 preschoolers have untreated tooth decay. These numbers are alarming, especially considering that early childhood dental caries can lead to pain, infection, and a negative impact on overall health and well-being.
There are long-term effects as well; poor oral health that begins early can lead to conditions later in life. An article from the Oral Health Foundation revealed that people with gum disease brought on by consistently poor dental health are almost 2x as likely to have heart disease or stroke. Additionally, individuals without proper dental hygiene are at a much greater risk of developing diabetes, lung disease, or experiencing pregnancies with premature or low-weight babies. By focusing on oral health from an early age, parents can set their children up for a lifetime of healthy habits and reduce their risk of future dental or other health problems.
What is the Brush! Oral Health Program?
The Brush! program is a comprehensive oral health education initiative designed specifically for children from birth to 5 years old. It provides parents, caregivers, and educators with the resources to instill good oral hygiene habits in our youngest community members. From educational videos to classroom activities, Brush! covers all aspects of preschool oral health.
Ready, Set, Brush!
Let’s embrace healthy oral habits! Here are some top tips to keep those young smiles shining:
- Establish a consistent brushing routine: Brush twice a day for two minutes each time.
- Make flossing fun: Introduce flossing as a daily habit from an early age.
- Pack smile-friendly lunches: Choose tooth-healthy snacks like crunchy vegetables and fruits.
- Schedule regular dental check-ups: Aim for two visits per year, starting from age one.
- Lead by example: Show your kids that oral health is important to you too!
K21 is committed to creating a healthier future for our children, and the Brush! program provided by McMillen Health is a fantastic step in that direction.
