Universally accessible playgrounds create an environment that fosters inclusion, dignity and shared experiences for everyone, including those with physical, sensory, cognitive or social-emotional differences. In Kosciusko County, families are fortunate to have a place where children and caregivers of all abilities can enjoy the space together: Winona Lake Limitless Park.

The park offers opportunities for social engagement and play that extend beyond current Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. Solid surfaces, as opposed to mulch or gravel, enable wheelchair users and individuals with walkers or strollers to move easily and access all play areas. Sensory-rich musical play equipment and balance beams support a range of abilities and play styles. Climbing rocks and crawl tunnels with varying levels of difficulty encourage success for a variety of abilities, while quiet retreat spaces support children who benefit from lower-stimulation areas.

“Creating an accessible playground in Kosciusko County was not just important; it was essential,” said Winona Lake Park Director Holly Hummitch. “Kosciusko County needed a space where everyone, regardless of age, ability or background, could feel welcomed and included. A place where children with disabilities wouldn’t have to watch from the sidelines. A place where siblings could play side-by-side. A place where families could gather without concern for accessibility limitations.” Winona Lake Limitless Park is the only park in the county currently offering this level of accessibility and inclusion.

Nearby, the fully accessible splash pad, restrooms and shaded seating areas make it easy for caregivers to observe or join in and enjoy the experience. It’s a place designed to remove barriers, spark joy and create community through play.

At K21 Health Foundation, we believe in supporting municipalities and nonprofit organizations that work toward building a healthy and active Kosciusko County—for all ages and abilities. With that goal at the forefront of our grantmaking strategy, we’ve provided eight grants over many years totaling $855,828 for the construction and renovation of Winona Lake Limitless Park.

Work on the park began in 2014, and our first grant supported the construction of the K21 Splash Pad. K21 grants have contributed to every phase of development and expansion, including the tennis courts and shoreline renovations, and the construction of the playground and pickleball courts. Additionally, K21 supported the greenways and pathways that run through and around the park, providing a connection to other experiences in and around Winona Lake.

“Winona Lake Limitless Park stands today as a symbol of what’s possible when a community comes together with a shared vision of inclusion, accessibility and joy for all,” shared Winona Lake Town Manager Craig Allebach. “This vision could not have become a reality without the unwavering support of the K21 Health Foundation. From the earliest phases of planning through each stage of development, K21’s commitment to health, wellness and equitable access made them a cornerstone partner in bringing Limitless Park to life.”

“We’re proud to support Winona Lake Limitless Park as they build a play space that can be enjoyed by all Kosciusko County residents,” said Rich Haddad, President and CEO of K21 Health Foundation. “With its splash pad, play equipment, pickleball and tennis courts, and nearby walking paths and greenways, Winona Lake Limitless Park supports two of our four health pillars as we work toward improving the health and well-being of all community members.”
